I don’t know about you, but yes I’m one of those hard core fans of “Game of Thrones” there’s something so primal about how raw the show is in displaying Human Behaviour – Good, Bad and Ugly! I was captivated from Day 1. Most likely because I have a Passion for Human Behaviour and understanding People’s Attitudes and Motivations and what moves us forward to achieve greatness and what keeps us from ever reaching our full potentials as Unique Individuals.
There is one character that I admire the most, which is the heroine Daenerys Targaryen – The Mother of Dragons. A Leader of Integrity and Authenticity. Her intentions were always clear with her People and with her counsel. She has suffered through so much but had a strong self-belief, Grace under fire and displayed unwavering resilience in any situation. Just quietly I am rooting for her to rule over the 7 Kingdoms.
“I spent my life in foreign lands. So many men have tried to kill me, I don’t remember all their names. I have been sold like a broodmare. I’ve been chained and betrayed, raped and defiled. Do you know what kept me standing through all those years in exile? Faith. Not in any gods, not in myths and legends. In myself. In Daenerys Targaryen. The world hadn’t seen a dragon in centuries until my children were born. The Dothraki hadn’t crossed the sea, any sea. They did for me. I was born to rule the Seven Kingdoms, and I will.”
As a Leader, there are many ways to Lead a team but there’s only one correct way to be an Authentic Leader. Are you a Leader like the Mother of Dragons? Do you lead your team they way you’d like? Do you want to be?
Here are 3Ms to move you closer to Authentic Leadership:
- Mindset – What are your thoughts telling you? Are they encouraging you to grow and move out of your comfort zone to try new things or are they betraying you telling you that things are too hard, you can’t make a difference and sabotaging your Success? How much do you rely on others opinions vs your inner pendulum? Is there a healthy balance?
- Momentum – Do you let set-backs and failures define you or do you chalk them up to experience and lessons learned? Do you seek out alternatives to Problems or tend to only see opportunities and lose sight of the threats? Do you welcome feedback or consider it to be negative criticism? How does that impact you moving forward as a Leader?
- Movement – What actions are you taking to move you forward to your desired outcome? At work what decisions are you making? What emotions are you displaying? How are your thoughts and emotions impacting on yourself, your team and your organisation? Is it moving the team forward or are they stuck?
